Exploring layered techniques from the Spellbinders Serenity Garden Collection

Welcome to Day Five and the grand finale of my mini‑series featuring the Serenity Garden Collection by Spellbinders! This release has been such a joy to explore, and today’s project highlights the Astrantia Floral Set — a favorite for creating realistic, dimensional flowers.

You might recognize some elements from earlier posts, like the Petals, leaves and centers, but today we’re giving them a fresh twist and using them as originally intended! It’s all about stretching your supplies and finding new ways to make your florals come alive.

Creating the Astrantia Florals

I started by cutting all the flower pieces and leaves from white cardstock, then colored them with Olo Markers. Here’s a little trick for the tiny flower centers: if you don’t have cardstock in the color you want, color a small section of white cardstock on both sides before die‑cutting. It saves so much time and keeps those tiny pieces neat!

Once colored, I shaped and assembled the flowers. I’ll admit, the Astrantia assembly looked intimidating at first — but after watching Susan Tierney‑Cockburn’s tutorial on Spellbinders, I realized it’s easier than it looks. The layering gives such a beautiful, natural depth.

Building the Background

With the florals ready, I embossed a piece of light blue cardstock using the Ode to a Poet Embossing Folder. I lightly swiped the raised areas with Hero Arts White Pigment Ink to highlight the texture.

While the ink dried, I cut and assembled my sentiment using the Layered Thank You Die by Spellbinders. Once the background was dry, I trimmed it and added a slightly larger black panel behind it for contrast, then adhered everything to a white card base.

Finally, I arranged the Astrantia flowers and leaves on the embossed panel and added the sentiment with foam tape for dimension.

Finishing Touches

The result is a soft, elegant thank‑you card that celebrates the delicate beauty of the Astrantia blooms. It’s a wonderful reminder that 3D florals don’t have to be intimidating — just take it one petal at a time!
