Simon Hurley Halloween Hugs by Spellbinders
If you know anything about me, you know that Halloween is one of my favorite days of the year! I personally believe it should be a holiday that everyone gets off work. When I saw the Halloween Hugs Collection, I was giddy with joy — and had such fun creating with it!
This post features four projects using the die sets from the collection: Sir Skeleton, Frank, Drac, and Wickedly Sweet. One thing you may not know about these sets is that the sentiment banners and sentiments are interchangeable between them, giving you endless creative options!
Sir Skeleton — A Little Lash and a Lot of Charm
My first card features the exclusive Sir Skeleton Die Set, and I decided to have a little fun by giving my skeleton eyelashes!
I die-cut the skeleton from Fog cardstock, the eyeball sockets from Raven, the backer for the eyeballs from Classic White, and the nose backer from Anchor. The hat was cut using the Bewitched Die Set from Oceanside and Raven, and the eyelashes came from the Steamboat Willie Duo Set.
Before assembling, I used a blending brush with leftover gray ink to add dimension to the skeleton pieces. For the eyelashes, I layered white behind the black eyeball sockets and adhered the lashes to the back.
To create the background, I used the Color Block Accent Rectangles Die and A2 Precision Rectangles Dies, lightly blending Hero Arts Green Apple Ink for a subtle glow behind Sir Skeleton.
The sentiment was hot foiled using the Ghoulish Greetings Press and Foil Plate with Black Glimmer Foil. After assembling all layers, I added the hat and sentiment — and Sir Skeleton was ready to charm!
Frank — A Patchwork of Personality
My second card features Frank Etched Dies, and while there were quite a few colors involved, the final result was worth every cut!
Color Palette:
- Mirrored Onyx – Hair
- Black Pearl – Shoes, Spider Webs
- Saffron – Shirt and behind Pumpkins
- Carrot – Pumpkins
- Peridot – Frank and Moon
- Lilac – Arms, Jacket, Pants
- Acorn – Ground
- Teal Topaz – Background
- Raven – Eyes, Mouth, Eyebrows
- Poppy – Tongue
- Classic White – Eyes
- Brushed Silver – Bolts
Tip: Frank doesn’t come with pants — but mine does! I made them by cutting a rectangle from Lilac cardstock, trimming a “V” from the center, and using the shirt die edge to create grooves. For legs, I used small Peridot pieces, and for shoes, I borrowed from the Steamboat Willie Duo Set, flattening both shoes and flipping one for symmetry.
The hill was hand-cut, pumpkins and webs came from Halloween City Holiday Decorations, and the moon was from the Drac Set. I added subtle ink blending with C9 Eggplant, Espresso, and Rainforest for depth.
After assembling Frank, I added thin foam squares behind his head for dimension and foiled the sentiment from Happy Halloween Sentiments with Black Glimmer Foil. A light ink blend softened the white background — and Frank was ready to frighten (sweetly)!
Drac — A Fangtastic Gentleman
Card three features Drac Etched Dies, and he came out to play in style!
Color Palette:
- Raven – Sentiment Banner, Bats, Jacket, Eyes, Mouth, Eyebrows
- Seaside – Face and Hands
- Classic White – Shirt and Eyeballs
- Red Foil – Cape and Bow
- Black Glitter – Hair
- Gold Foil – Cup
- White Glitter – Moon
- Poppy – Tounge
Tip: Before cutting the bats, I added double-sided adhesive to the front of the cardstock. Once cut, I removed the adhesive backing and added black flocking for a fun, furry texture.
I gave the moon a yellow glow with Green Apple Ink and added Glaze ‘n Glue to the wine for a shiny, wet look.
The background was blended with Hero Arts Fawn, Fruit Punch, and Grape Slush, trimmed using A2 Precision Layering Dies (Sets A & B), and layered with Raven cardstock. After assembling Drac, I added foam squares behind his head and sentiment for lift — and finished with bats for a perfectly fangtastic scene!
Wickedly Sweet — A Birthday Twist
For my final card, I wanted to show the versatility of the collection — so I turned Wickedly Sweet Etched Dies into a birthday princess card!
Color Palette:
- Silver – Crown
- Silver Glitter – Wand
- Cinnamon – Hair
- Raven – Eyes and Mouth
- Poppy – Tongue
- Classic White – Button Backer, Sentiment Banner, Teeth, Eyeballs
- Blush – Dress
- Tutu – Sentiment Backer and Bow
- Lavender – Background
I embossed a piece of Lavender cardstock (4″ x 5.25″) using the Petite Tufted Embossing Folder and centered it on a white A2 card base. The princess was assembled and adhered, with the sentiment slightly lifted using thin foam squares.
Tip: For the final touch, I used a black fine-line pen to bring out her lashes — a small detail that adds big personality!
