Born for the Good Times Birthday Card with a Musical Twist

Create a Fun Birthday Card with a Music-Themed Embossed Background and Dancing Monster

Today’s project features the beautiful Favorite Song 3D Embossing Folder as the backdrop for a playful birthday card. I absolutely love that this embossing folder is filled with music notes because it is incredibly versatile and works for so many occasions. Whether you are making birthday cards, celebration projects, scrapbook pages, or themed party invitations, this design easily becomes a staple crafting tool.

For this card, I paired the musical background with a fun dancing monster to create a birthday project that feels energetic, whimsical, and perfect for celebrating.

Creating the Embossed Musical Background

To begin, I embossed a piece of dark blue cardstock using the Favorite Song 3D Embossing Folder from Spellbinders. The deep blue creates a dramatic backdrop while allowing the embossed notes to stand out beautifully.

After embossing, I lightly brushed Hero Arts Unicorn Pigment Ink across the raised areas. This simple technique highlights the texture and brings out the musical details without overpowering the background.

Since pigment ink takes longer to dry, I set the panel aside while working on the remaining card elements.

Building the Dancing Birthday Monster

For the focal point, I used the Dancin’ Birthday Monster Die Set from Spellbinders. This adorable die set creates a playful character that instantly adds personality to any card.

I cut the body, arms, and legs from two shades of green cardstock to create subtle contrast and dimension. The teeth were cut from white cardstock, while the hat and pompom were created from yellow and orange scraps.

Before assembling, I used a lightly inked detail blending brush to add soft shadows to the monster’s body pieces. This extra shading helps define the layers and gives the finished character more depth.

One of the most fun details on this die set is the ability to make the legs move. Instead of gluing them flat, I used a small round foam dot in the die-cut opening so the legs could swing freely.

Adding Personality with Fun Details

For the eyes, I decided to use googly eyes rather than the die-cut version included in the set. The movement and shine from the googly eyes add even more character.

I also added glasses from the Smart Glasses Die Set. This is one of those die sets that quickly becomes a favorite because it works with so many character projects. Adding glasses instantly changes the personality of critters, monsters, animals, and even floral arrangements.

Creating the Birthday Sentiments

For the sentiment, I used stamps from the Good Times Stamp and Die of the Month from March 2026.

I stamped the sentiments using black ink and heat embossed them with clear embossing powder for a polished finish.

The “Born for the Good Times” sentiment was cut with the coordinating die for a clean and professional appearance.

For the “Have a Super Birthday” sentiment strip, I centered the stamped phrase on a ¾-inch strip of white cardstock. I then layered it onto a silver mat cut slightly larger to create a subtle border.

Assembling the Birthday Card

Once the embossed background panel was fully dry, I trimmed it to 4.25” x 5.5”.

The sentiment strip was added toward the bottom portion of the card to ground the design. I then attached the dancing monster using foam tape, allowing extra room for the legs to move freely.

Finally, I added the “Born for the Good Times” sentiment at a slight angle near the top for a playful finishing touch.

The completed card front was mounted onto a standard A2 card base using liquid adhesive.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely love how this card turned out. The music-themed embossing folder pairs perfectly with the dancing monster and creates a fun celebration feel.

This project shows how a textured background can instantly elevate a simple card design while still allowing the focal image to shine.
