A Quick Yet Elegant Floral Birthday Card Design

Today’s card is proof that beautiful handmade cards do not need to take hours to create. For this birthday project, I used the Spellbinders Leaf and Bloom Etched Dies set to create a soft floral arrangement that feels elegant, timeless, and perfect for celebrating someone special.
This card came together fairly quickly, but the finished look still feels polished and layered. By combining alcohol marker coloring, subtle stenciling, and a foiled sentiment, the design has just enough detail to make it feel special without becoming overwhelming.
Coloring the Floral Die Cuts
I started by die-cutting all of the floral pieces from white cardstock using the Leaf and Bloom Etched Dies set from Spellbinders.
To customize the flowers, I colored each piece with Olo Alcohol Markers before assembling the blooms.
Olo Marker Colors Used
- Flowers: B 2.2 and B 2.4
- Floral Centers: YO 2.3
- Stems and Leaves: YG 1.4 and G 5.3
Coloring the die cuts before assembly makes it easy to add depth and variation to the petals and leaves. Once everything was colored, I assembled the flowers and set them aside while creating the card background.
Creating a Soft Layered Background
For the layout, I wanted the floral arrangement to sit on a clean white panel that stretched vertically across the card but did not reach the card edges.
Card Dimensions
- White Panel: 3.5” x 5.5”
- Blue Layering Panel: 3.75” x 5.5”
- Standard A2 White Card Base: 4.25” x 5.5”
To create a soft grounded effect behind the flowers, I used the Hero Arts Tile Pattern Stencil with Hero Arts Splash Ink.
Instead of covering the entire background, I lightly blended ink in the center area where the flowers would sit. Allowing the ink to fade toward the edges helped create a subtle foundation for the floral cluster without overwhelming the clean design.
Once the stenciling was complete, I adhered the white panel onto the blue layer and prepared the arrangement for assembly.
Adding the Floral Arrangement
After the background layers were complete, I adhered the previously assembled flowers onto the white panel.
The floral cluster creates movement across the card while keeping the design balanced and elegant. The layered flowers stand out beautifully against the soft blue backdrop.
Finishing with a Foiled Sentiment
For the sentiment, I selected one from the You Are Everything Sentiments Press Plate and Die Set.
I hot foiled the sentiment using Black Glimmer Foil and cut it out with the coordinating die.
To help the sentiment sit nicely over the floral stems, I attached it using 1 mm thick foam tape. This added dimension while keeping the sentiment readable and visually centered.
For the final embellishment, I added a few flat back pearls from my stash to bring in a soft finishing touch.
A Reminder That Simple Can Still Be Beautiful
This card came together quickly, but still feels elegant and thoughtfully designed.
Sometimes we can feel like handmade cards need to be complicated or time-consuming to make an impact. This project was a great reminder that simple layers, soft color, and a few carefully chosen details can create a card that feels both beautiful and meaningful.
