See how the Spellbinders Stitching Die of the Month for November 2026 transforms from a fun party hat into a stitched Christmas tree card with a little creative thinking.
Sometimes a Die Is More Than What It Seems
Who says you have to use a craft supply exactly the way it was intended?
When I opened the Spellbinders Stitching Die of the Month for November 2026, Party On! Stitched Hat, I immediately saw more than a party hat. While the set is designed to create a festive stitched birthday hat, I couldn’t help but imagine other possibilities. One look at the main die shape and all I could see was a Christmas tree.
Today I’m sharing two very different cards created from the very same die set. The first card uses the die exactly as intended, while the second card takes a completely different creative path. It is always fun to stretch your supplies and get even more value from your crafting tools.
Card One: Celebrate Big Party Hat Card

For my first card, I decided to embrace the original design and create a cheerful celebration card featuring the party hat.
One of the things I love about this month’s kit is that Spellbinders included both the outer die and the inserts used for stitching. This allowed me to use only the non-stitching portions of the design and create a quick, layered card with lots of dimension.
Creating the Background
I started with a piece of leftover patterned paper from my stash. The paper was trimmed to 4″ x 5.25″, creating a simple and colorful background that allowed the party hat to take center stage.
The entire patterned paper panel was later adhered to an A2 card base made from Classic White Cardstock.
Die Cutting the Party Hat
For the hat elements, I used the following cardstock colors:
- Mulberry Cardstock – base of the sentiment flag, party hat base, and pom pom
- Orchid Cardstock – party hat top layer and ruffle
- Classic White Cardstock – Celebrate Big sentiment
Adding Extra Dimension
Before assembling the hat, I decided the pom pom needed a little extra personality.
Using my detail scissors, I carefully cut small fringes all the way around the pom pom. Once those cuts were made, I used a stylus ball tool to shape the pom pom into a rounded, dimensional embellishment.
After assembling the hat, I added foam tape behind the entire piece. I doubled up the foam tape behind the pom pom to help preserve the dimension and shape I had created.
For the sentiment, I adhered the Celebrate Big banner using foam tape on only one side. This balanced the sentiment visually with the raised party hat and helped create a cohesive design.
The result is a quick, festive card that would be perfect for birthdays, graduations, or any celebration worth commemorating.
Card Two: Turning a Party Hat Into a Christmas Tree
For my second card, I headed in the complete opposite direction.
From the moment I first saw this die set, all I could see was a Christmas tree. Once that idea popped into my head, I simply couldn’t unsee it.
I originally planned to use the hat ruffle as a tree skirt, but after assembling the card I decided the design looked cleaner without it.

Creating the Stitched Christmas Tree
To create the tree, I die cut the main shape twice from Fern Cardstock:
- One cut using only the outer die
- One cut using the stitching insert die
For the tree trunk, I hand-cut a simple rectangle from Truffle Cardstock.
Stitching the Tree
With all of my die-cut pieces ready, it was time for the stitching.
I chose DMC Metallic Floss D3821 to add a festive sparkle to the card.
For each stitched burst pattern, I began in the center hole and stitched outward to each surrounding hole, returning to the center after every stitch. This created the beautiful starburst effect that resembles ornaments scattered across the tree.
Once all of the stitching was complete, I adhered the solid tree layer behind the stitched panel. This not only finished the look of the tree but also helped secure all of the stitching on the back.
Building the Winter Background
For the sentiment, I selected one from the Winter Peace BetterPress and Foil Plate set.
Using Black BetterPress Ink and the BetterPress System, I pressed the sentiment onto Classic White Cardstock and then used the coordinating dies to cut it out.
I knew I wanted snowflakes behind the tree, but I also wanted a little shimmer and sparkle.
To create the background panel, I embossed a piece of white glitter cardstock using the Flurry of Snowflakes Embossing Folder. Once embossed, I trimmed the panel down to fit perfectly behind the tree.
To help the snowflake panel stand out, I matted it onto a slightly larger piece of Raven Cardstock. That tiny black border creates a subtle frame that draws the eye directly toward the focal point.
The snowflake panel was then centered and adhered to a piece of Fern Cardstock measuring 4.25″ x 5.5″. This completed panel was attached to an A2 card base.
Finishing the Card
To finish the design, I adhered the tree trunk to the stitched tree and attached the assembled tree directly to the snowflake background.
The sentiment was adhered using foam tape on each end, while liquid adhesive was applied over the tree trunk area. By raising only the ends with foam tape, the sentiment remains level while bridging over the trunk.
The metallic stitching paired with the sparkling embossed snowflake background creates a festive holiday card that started as something completely unexpected.
Stretching Your Supplies and Seeing New Possibilities
One of my favorite parts of crafting is finding unexpected ways to use products. While this die set was designed as a party hat, I’ve already seen some amazing alternative ideas from other creators.
One crafter transformed it into a slice of pie using the hat ruffle as a pie crust. Another turned it into a slice of Swiss cheese. And of course, I saw a Christmas tree.
That is the beauty of crafting. We can all start with the exact same supplies and end up with completely different projects.
