Stretch Your Supplies with the Spellbinders Simon Hurley Happy Spring Collection – ornate eggs embossing folder
With Spring in the air, it is the perfect time to start working on spring and Easter cards. There is something so refreshing about pulling out soft pastels, sweet bunnies, and delicate textures after a long winter season.
Today’s project features the beautiful Simon Hurley Happy Spring Collection from Spellbinders, and I decided to use one of my favorite supply-stretching techniques — the Deboss Method.

What Is the Deboss Method?
Simply put, the Deboss Method is embossing — but instead of using the raised (embossed) side, you flip the panel over and use the pressed-down (debossed) side.
It is such an easy way to stretch your supplies.
If you have never tried it, emboss a couple of panels and compare both sides. You may discover you love them both. If that happens, make a coordinating set instead of just one card. That is always a win.
Creating the Textured Background
To start this project, I embossed a 5.5” x 4” piece of Lavender Colorwheel cardstock from Spellbinders using the ornate eggs embossing folder.
Both sides were absolutely stunning, but I chose to use the debossed side for this card. The pressed-in details create such a soft, elegant texture — perfect for an Easter design. This panel became the base layer of my card.
Building the Adorable Bunny
For the focal image, I used one of the bunnies from the bunny buddies die set. These bunnies are just adorable. I have already made several projects with them, and I know I will be reaching for this set for years to come.
I cut the main bunny pieces and sentiment from Classic White cardstock.
- Ears: Tutu
- Behind the eyes: Raven
- Egg: Seaside
- Egg and Sentiment background: Silver from the Silver Treasured Cardstock Collection
Before assembling, I lightly brushed on a bit of brown ink (what remained on my blending brush) to add soft highlights and dimension. Using the bunny buddies layering guide made assembly simple, and I secured everything with liquid adhesive.
Adding a Grounding Element
Once my bunny was assembled, I noticed something important — it felt a bit flat against the beautiful texture of the debossed background.
It needed grounding.
This is where a basic shape can make all the difference. A simple shape behind your focal image draws the eye in without overwhelming the design.
For this project, I chose vellum for its softness. It allowed the ornate egg design to peek through while still helping the bunny stand out. I cut a small oval from vellum using the Essential Stylish Ovals Dies.
The vellum added just the right amount of separation and balance.
Assembling with Dimension
To assemble the card, I used thin foam tape on:
- The back of the bunny
- The sentiment
- The vellum (strategically hidden behind the bunny)
By adding foam tape to the bunny first and attaching it to the vellum, I was able to conceal the adhesive. Then I added additional foam tape behind the vellum where the bunny would cover it. This provided a slight amount of additional lift between the vellum and the debossed design.
Finally, I adhered everything to the debossed lavender panel and mounted it onto a white A2 card base.
Final Thoughts
I absolutely love how fun and playful this project turned out. The debossed background provides elegance and texture, while the bunny adds sweetness and charm. It is such a simple technique, but it truly elevates the finished design.
If you are looking for ways to stretch your embossing folders and add variety to your projects, I highly encourage you to give the Deboss Method a try.
What do you think about using the debossed side of your embossing folders? Have you tried it before, or do you usually reach for the raised side?
