Simple Stenciled Butterflies with a Meaningful Sentiment
One of my favorite surprises from the Spellbinders Advent Calendar is a good sentiment stamp set. For Day 11, that is exactly what we received, and it could not be more perfect.
I am always in need of thinking of you style cards. These are the cards I reach for when someone needs encouragement, comfort, or just a reminder that they are loved. While elaborate cards are fun to make, I truly believe that simple designs can be just as impactful, if not more so.
With that in mind, I created a clean and elegant card that lets the sentiment take center stage while still incorporating soft color and interest.

Stenciled Butterfly Background
To create the background, I used the butterfly stencil set from Day 7 and stenciled butterflies across a piece of white cardstock cut to 4.25” x 5.5”.
For the ink blending, I chose three colors from Gina K Designs:
Using a small blending brush, I worked from the center of each butterfly outward. The darkest color was applied at the center of the wings, gradually transitioning to the lightest color along the edges. This simple technique adds depth and softness without requiring any complicated steps.
Once the stenciling was complete, I trimmed the panel down to approximately 3 3/4” x 5 1/4”.
Matting for Contrast and Definition
To frame the butterfly panel, I cut a black cardstock mat that extended about 1/8” beyond the stenciled panel on all sides. This thin border adds just enough contrast to help the colors pop while keeping the overall design clean and elegant.
Creating the Sentiment Strip
For the sentiment, I stamped one of the phrases from the Day 11 sentiment stamp set onto a strip of white cardstock. The strip was trimmed to 3/8” tall and left about 4” long.
To help the sentiment stand out, I added a black mat layer slightly wider than the white strip so the black shows along the top and bottom edges.
Because I wanted the sentiment to extend all the way to the edges of the butterfly panel, I intentionally left both pieces a bit longer than needed. After adhering the sentiment layers together, I attached them to the butterfly panel, centering them as best as possible. Once everything was secured, I trimmed the ends of the sentiment strip so they were flush with the sides of the butterfly panel.
The completed butterfly panel was then adhered to the black mat layer.
Final Assembly
To finish the card, I mounted the entire panel onto a white A2 card base.
This card came together very quickly, but the soft stenciling, bold sentiment, and clean matting give it a timeless and elegant look. It is a perfect reminder that simple designs can still be incredibly meaningful.
