A Versatile Die for Every Celebration
Oh goodness, today’s Spellbinders Advent surprise was another incredibly versatile die that immediately sparked several card ideas. For Day 8, we received the Happy Day Banner Die, and it truly lives up to its name.
I used this die to create a birthday-themed card, but I already have plans to use it for a graduation card and another for the first day of summer. This die would also be perfect for celebrating milestones like getting braces off, earning a driver’s license, or any reason that deserves a little extra joy. It is one of those sentiment dies that works for almost any occasion.
This banner pairs beautifully with the Spellbinders Classic Road Legends Dies, which recently won Best of Spellbinders 2025. Together, they offer endless creative possibilities, driver’s license, car show award, first day of a road trip!

Thoughtful Die Design Details
One thing I really loved about this die set is how thoughtfully it was designed. Spellbinders included both a single solid banner flag and sets of solid flags, making it easy to use one color for your letters or mix multiple colors together.
For today’s card, I chose to keep everything in one color. Since I never seem to have enough birthday cards that lean masculine, I stuck with a more neutral color palette. I cut the lettered banner flags from Beeswax cardstock and the solid banner backing from Raven cardstock.
Adding Color with Die-Cut Balloons
To bring in some fun and color, I used the Color Block Balloons Die Set to cut three balloons from assorted Spellbinders cardstock. The colors I used were:
Once the balloons and sentiment flags were assembled and adhered together, it was time to think about the overall layout of the card.
Textured Background with a Retro Feel
For the background, I chose the Plaster Embossing Folder. The texture immediately reminded me of the walls in my aunt’s house back in the 1970s, which made it extra fun for me to use. It added just the right amount of interest without overpowering the die cuts.
After embossing the panel, I started arranging all the elements to find the best placement.
A Simple Fix for the Banner Strings
While laying everything out, I decided I wanted the banner flags to extend off the corners of the card. The only problem was that the string on the banner wasn’t quite long enough.
To fix this, I cut additional strings using the balloon strings from the Color Block Balloons set and glued them on top of the banner string. Problem solved, and it blended in perfectly.
Finishing Touches and Dimension
Once the layout was finalized, I added foam tape to the back of each piece to give the card a floating effect. I adhered the embossed plaster panel to the card base, then added all of the balloons and banner pieces on top.
This card came together quickly and easily, and the finished result is cheerful, versatile, and perfect for a wide range of celebrations.
