Spellbinders Advent 2025 Day 14: Turning a Worm Die into a Thoughtful Handmade Card

Spellbinders Advent 2025 Day 14 – A Surprisingly Adorable Die

Once again, today’s surprise from the 2025 Spellbinders Advent Calendar does not disappoint. For Day 14, we received an adorable worm die. I know—worms and adorable are not usually words you hear together, but I promise this one truly is. If your curious how I turned this unexpected character into a heartfelt card, keep reading.

A Card to Simply Be There

For this project, I wanted to create a card that lets someone know they are not alone. Sometimes people don’t need advice or solutions—they just need reassurance that someone is there for them if they need support. This simple sentiment guided the entire design.

Creating a Soft Sunset Background

I started by creating a setting sun background using ink blending. I chose Distress Oxide inks in Villainous Potion, Abandoned Coral, and Spiced Marmalade. These inks blend beautifully and dry to a soft, chalky finish that works perfectly for atmospheric backgrounds.

Once the blending was complete, I allowed the panel to dry fully before moving on to splatter.

Adding White Splatter for Texture

To add interest and depth, I used Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleed Proof White for splatter. If you do not already own this product, it is absolutely worth the investment. A small amount goes a very long way—I have been using the same jar for over three years and it is still mostly full. It also stays a true, bright white once dry, which is something many white splatter products struggle to do.

The product is very thick straight from the jar. I place a small amount on a stamping block using the back of a fan brush, then mist in a few drops of water and mix until smooth. The brush you use makes a big difference in the size of your splatter. To achieve the fine mist effect on this card, I used a fan brush with just a light touch of Bleed Proof White.

Die Cutting and Coloring the Worm

For the die cuts, I used the Day 14 worm die set along with a selection of cardstock colors.

For the worm, I used Tutu, Blush, Raven, and Classic White cardstock.
For the leaf, I used Acorn and Rainforest cardstock.
For the water droplets, I used Windy cardstock.

Once everything was die cut, I added subtle shading with ink blending. For the worm, I used Concord & 9th Dragon Fruit ink. For the leaf, I used Concord & 9th Parsley ink. These small details really help bring the character to life.

After shading, all of the pieces were assembled and adhered together.

Designing the Card Layout

With all of the elements ready, I moved on to the layout. I knew I wanted a large white frame to keep the design clean and focused.

I used the Perfect Touch Rectangle and Tag Set to cut the sunset panel. Behind that, I added a black mat cut using the Rectangle Precision A Nesting Die Set. Both Sets A and B are staples in my craft room and get used constantly.

Stamping the Sentiment

After arranging the design, I decided the sentiment would look best stamped directly onto the background panel. Using my unadhered design as a guide, I positioned the sentiment from the Day 11 stamp set in my stamp tool. Once the placement was perfect, I removed the die-cut elements and stamped the sentiment.

Final Assembly

With the sentiment in place, I adhered all of the die-cut elements onto the sunset panel. The finished panel was then adhered to a white A2 card base.

I absolutely love how this card came together. If you picked up the Spellbinders Advent Calendar, I would love to hear what you created with your worm die. What other characters do you have that might not seem cute at first but could be transformed into something special? I would love to hear about your projects.
